PhD thesis - sublimation

PhD Topic:

The advertised position deals with research and development of material cycles for compound semiconductors (GaN, AlGaN, InGaN, ScAlN) and their components (light emitting diodes, power transistors, high frequency filters). Processes are being evaluated that will allow semiconductor chips to be separated from the electronic components and the semiconductor materials they contain to be separated back into their original elements so that they can be fed back into the production of layers and layer structures. By establishing material cycles for compound semiconductors, we want to contribute to the sustainability of industry-relevant components.

Job Details:

  • Scientific Employee
  • Part-time position (50%) - transfer to full-time position possible after one year
  • The position offers the possibility of doctoral studies
  • Starting date: At the next possible date
  • Time limit: 3 years

Sublimation

Activity Description:

  • Simulation of thermodynamic properties (heat capacity, heat conduction) of layers and layer structures of compound semiconductors
  • Development and fabrication of layers and layer structures in the clean room of the Technical Faculty
  • Characterization of material properties of ternary solid solutions as a function of temperature (phase transformation, sublimation, crystal structures)
  • Development of a process to recover the elements/raw materials of compound semiconductors from electronic devices
  • Design and development of a material cycle for indium, gallium and scandium

We expect

  • Basic knowledge in solid state physics and semiconductor physics
  • Enjoyment of the combination of experimental and theoretical problems
  • Above-average self-motivation to research sustainable processes
  • Pleasure in participating in a team of researchers

We offer:

  • Basic and application-oriented research projects in the field of sustainable power electronic systems.
  • Modern equipment for fabrication and characterization (optical, electrical and structural) of layers and layer structures based on compound semiconductors
  • A pleasant working environment in a competent and helpful team
