Living in Freiburg

One of Germany's most attractive student-friendly cities

Located in the scenic Southwestern region of Germany, Freiburg not only ranks most highly among Germany's sunniest cities, it also has a reputation for the prosperity and high quality of life enjoyed by its residents. It is small enough to make you feel at home right from the first day and at the same time it's big enough to be lively and international. Tradition and modern life are linked in perfect harmony. Apart from a mild climate and a wonderful scenery, locals and students alike appreciate its unique flair, its diverse cultural life and take advantage of its proximity to France and Switzerland.Whether by car or train, a trip to France or Switzerland is just 30-45 minutes away. Paris is even closer to Freiburg than Berlin, and Zurich closer than Frankfurt!

Due to its excellent, affordable transportation system, its more than adequate accommodation of bicyclist and pedestrian traffic as well as its green areas, Freiburg is especially deserving of its reputation as a student-friendly city. Beyond that, the Black Forest city has a wide range of local pubs, bars and cafes, and offers a great variety of recreational activities. Founded by Archduke Albrecht in 1457, the University of Freiburg is one of the oldest German universities and is now one of the nation’s leading research and teaching institutions.

Travel in and around Freiburg with your Semesterticket

With a Semesterticket (semester/season ticket) for public transportation, students can travel around the entire network of the RVF Verkehrsverbund Freiburg for one semester (6 months). But even without a semester ticket you have an advantage: All students of local universities travel for free on buses and trains of the RVF in the evenings with their valid student ID. This offer applies daily from 7:30 pm.

Get around with a bike

For an easy way to university or just get around, it's normal to use the bike in Freiburg. There are not many hills and almost all streets have bike lanes. If you're new and want to buy (or sell) a cheap bike, we can recommend bicycle fairs or look on www.kleinanzeigen.de(German version of Craigslist). Both are good ways to get a nice bike for a good price. Another way to get a bike is renting it. The Student Union also offers a self-help bike repair shop.
