Department of Sustainable Systems Engineering (INATECH)

The University of Freiburg founded the new Institute of Sustainable Systems Engineering (INATECH) in October 2015 with the aim to connect teaching and research in the field of sustainable systems and to complete it with an engineering research facility for sustainability research.

Together with the Institute of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK) and the Institute of Computer Science (IIF) it builds the Faculty of Engineering.

In cooperation with the Fraunhofer-Institutes in Freiburg, following research emphasis were conceptualized

  • Sustainable Materials, which can be produced and applied in an energy and resource friendly  way
  • Energy Systems, which can provide a reliable and efficient supply and storage of renewable energies
  • Resilience, which can secure the resistance and adaptability of systems towards environmental disasters and climate change

Moreover, INATECH is giving new impetus in the field of teaching: the english-taught Master of Science program ‘Sustainable Systems Engineering’ has started successfully in winter term 2016/17 and will likely be followed by a Bachelor of Science program (expected winter term 2018/19).
